On July 17, the domestically produced 14-meter-class super-large diameter shield tunneling machine "Pioneer" rolled off the production line in Changsha. With an excavation diameter of 14.02 meters, a total length of approximately 112 meters, and a total weight of about 3,200 tonnes, this shield tunneling machine will be used in the construction of the Taihu Lake crossing section of the Wuxi-Yixing intercity railway (the S2 Line). This is the country's first ultra-large diameter shield tunnel beneath Taihu Lake.
The "Pioneer," jointly built by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited and China Railway 14th Bureau Group, will primarily be responsible for tunneling in two sections--from Mashan Station to the east working shaft of Zhushan Lake, and from Mashan Station to the west working shaft of Meiliang Lake. These sections feature a typical "soft upper, hard lower" strata, with bedrock strength exceeding 60 MPa. Additionally, the tunnel must pass beneath risk sources such as the Central River, imposing extremely stringent requirements for controlling ground settlement.
The "Pioneer" incorporates multiple technological innovations. For example, it features a pressurized composite cutterhead design with various cutter types, including disc cutters, scraper cutters, overcutters, and gauge cutters, which can be flexibly combined and replaced according to the geological conditions. The machine is also equipped with a high-power crusher system capable of crushing particles up to 1,200 millimeters and rock with a strength of up to 200 MPa. This system efficiently crushes hard rock blocks and mud clumps, ensuring the smooth operation of the slurry circulation system. In terms of intelligent features, the shield tunneling machine integrates multiple technologies, including a high-precision guidance system, an intelligent excavation management system, an automatic shield tail clearance measurement system, and a segment uplift monitoring system.
