According to the Forestry Department of Hunan Province, the province's land utilized for under-forest economy has reached 2.4467 million hectares, with output value exceeding 67 billion CNY and over 3.1 million practitioners. Of these, the number of national-level under-forest economic demonstration bases has reached 59, ranking first nationwide.

A total of 102 counties, cities, and districts are developing under-forest economy across the province, covering ten major under-forest industries including medicinal herbs, mushrooms, and poultry and livestock. In addition to national-level bases, 403 provincial-level demonstration bases and 56 forestry-specific industrial parks have been established, forming a development pattern characterized by "national guidance, provincial-level driving force, and park-based support."

Technological support serves as a critical driver for improving industrial quality and efficiency. The province has built an industry-academia-research collaborative innovation system, won six provincial and ministerial-level sci-tech awards, formulated 52 industry standards, and promoted over 60 sci-tech achievements. Core technologies such as high-efficiency cultivation of Polygonatum cyrtonema and strain creation for Gastrodia elata have been applied in multiple regions.

Sci-tech achievements are being rapidly extended to counties. Longshan County has carried out under-forest composite cultivation demonstrations of Chinese medicinal herbs centered on Phellodendron amurense, Polygonatum, Coptis chinensis, and Magnolia officinalis. Huitong County has cultivated superior varieties of Epimedium, overcome challenges such as seedling degeneration and impure germplasm, and developed green pest control and growth-cycle regulation technologies, moving the industry from being "small, scattered, and weak" to "high-quality, specialized, and strong." Currently, the province has collected and preserved over 300 species of under-forest medicinal plants.
