According to data released by the Changsha Customs Authority on June 22, in the first five months of this year, Hunan exported 47,000 electric vehicles, continuing the upward trend. The export volume rose 38.7% year on year, with the total value reaching 4.7 billion CNY, up 15.1%.

Hunan's electric vehicle exports feature a steady performance in plug-in hybrids and surging growth in pure electric models, reflecting growing international competitiveness. Plug-in hybrid vehicles are suitable for most developing countries, accounting for nearly 60% of the total. In the first five months, 27,000 plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles and 19,000 pure electric passenger vehicles were exported, rising 16.9% and 95.9% respectively.

Hunan's electric vehicles are mainly exported to the countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. Brazil, Malaysia, and the Philippines were the top three export markets, with the export volume to these countries accounting for over 60% of the total exports. Among them, 16,000 vehicles were exported to Brazil, soaring 167%; 9,399 vehicles to Malaysia; and, 4,064 vehicles to the Philippines, up 32.9%. During the same period, exports to countries such as Cambodia, Belarus, and Ghana saw significant growth.

Changsha, leveraging its BYD manufacturing base, contributed 68.2% of Hunan's EV exports. Xiangtan and Zhuzhou are mainly engaged in exporting commercial vehicles and auto parts. Huaihua saw remarkable growth, with export volume soaring 143.4 times and export value rising 78.3 times compared with the same period last year.

"While consolidating their presence in the traditional ASEAN and Eastern European markets, enterprises should proactively explore emerging markets in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America, diversifying their export destinations and bolstering resilience," a spokesperson from the Changsha Customs Authority said. The authority urged businesses to adopt the streamlined procedures for shipping lithium batteries in separate containers, and to take full advantage of customs territorial supervision to build the most favorable customs clearance environment for new-energy vehicles in the central regions of China. Furthermore, the authority advised leveraging the integrated industrial chain of the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan region to scale up exports of premium battery-electric and smart vehicles, and to pursue overseas assembly operations as a means of mitigating tariff barriers, thereby raising the profitability and global competitiveness in this sector.
