A new bus service in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, is making it easier and faster for local farmers to bring their fresh produce to market.
Every morning at around 6:30 am this week, farmers balancing freshly picked vegetables and melons in bags and baskets queue up for the W510 "Breeze" public bus in Wangcheng district.

The bus began operating last week as a special service of the W510 route. It offers a direct, nonstop service from Wangcheng bus station to the Xinyue farmers' market, covering approximately 17 kilometers. The bus runs daily before 7 am and is exclusively for farmers and their goods.
Before this service was introduced, farmers had to rely on regular buses, often requiring multiple transfers. Their heavy baskets of fruits and vegetables crowded the aisles, slowed down commutes, and raised safety concerns.
After visiting farms and consulting with vegetable growers about their needs, local transport authorities and the bus operator tailored this new service to them.
"The direct bus saves us a lot of time," said Zhang Chunhua, 70, a farmer who has been selling vegetables in city markets for years. "If we get to the market 10 minutes earlier, we can earn a little more money and head home sooner."

Officials from the Wangcheng district transport authority said that the service adjusts its capacity based on daily demand, with extra trips added during peak harvest seasons.
The authorities are also considering increasing flexibility in the future. In one example, a route could be repurposed for rural tourism during the off-peak farming season.
