Hunan's foreign trade reached 240.45 billion CNY in the first five months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 13.8%, the Changsha Customs Authority announced on June 12, 2026. Exports were 135.85 billion CNY and imports 104.6 billion CNY, growing 5.8% and 26.1% respectively. In May alone, Hunan's foreign trade increased 4.3% to 45.93 billion CNY.

During the January-May period, Hunan's trade with traditional markets such as the US, the EU, Japan, Hong Kong, and the UK amounted to 69.12 billion CNY, increasing 17.3% and driving overall foreign trade growth by 4.8 percentage points. Among them, Hunan's trade with Latin America, the EU, ASEAN, and Hong Kong grew 31.6%, 28%, 19.2%, and 15.9% respectively. The province's trade with the US rose 1.5% to 11.89 billion CNY, with monthly trade recording positive year-on-year growth for two consecutive months.

Exports of high-tech products were 18.68 billion CNY, a significant increase of 33.9%. In the first five months, Hunan's exports of mechanical and electrical products grew 12.2% to 80.85 billion CNY, driving overall export growth by 6.8 percentage points and raising their share of the province's exports to 59.5%. Among them, the provincial exports of automobiles and engineering machinery increased 23.6% and 20.1% respectively. The exports of the "new three" products—electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and photovoltaic products—grew 28.3%.

Imports of mechanical and electrical products and bulk commodities continued to play a driving role. In the first five months, Hunan's imports of mechanical and electrical products climbed 38.1% to 27.7 billion CNY, accounting for 26.5% of the province's total import value during the same period. Among them, imports of integrated circuits and computers along with their components surged 45.8% and 364% respectively, together driving overall import growth by 9.9 percentage points.

During the January-May period, 10 out of the province's 13 cities and one prefecture achieved double-digit growth in foreign trade. Changsha's foreign trade registered 125.02 billion CNY, accounting for over half of the province's total foreign trade value during the same period. The Changde Bonded Logistics Center (Type B) achieved its first-ever imports and exports, recording 20,000 CNY in trade this May, all of which were exports.
