Hunan's imports and exports with Africa totaled 22.59 billion CNY in the first five months of this year, an increase of 5.1% compared to the same period last year, the Changsha Customs Authority announced on June 12, 2026. Exports amounted to 9.99 billion CNY while imports were 12.6 billion CNY. Starting May 1 this year, China has fully implemented zero-tariff treatment covering all 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic ties. Since May, the dividends of the zero-tariff policy have been delivered, with Hunan's imports of African specialty agricultural products like coffee and cashew nuts, iron and copper ores and concentrates, and copper materials showing significant year-on-year growth.
South Africa was Hunan's largest trading partner in Africa. In the first five months, Hunan's imports and exports with South Africa reached 6.45 billion CNY, up 28.2%, accounting for 28.6% of the province's total trade with Africa. During the same period, Hunan's combined imports and exports with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana totaled 6.53 billion CNY, making up 28.9% of the provincial total; those with Guinea, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Mali, and other countries grew exponentially.
Imports were primarily composed of metal ores and concentrates, unwrought copper and copper materials. In the first five months, Hunan imported metal ores and concentrates worth 6.57 billion CNY from Africa, an increase of 40% and accounting for over half of Hunan's total imports from Africa during the period. Imports of natural and synthetic rubber (including latex) reached 770 million CNY, up 57.3%. Imports of specialty agricultural products such as coffee and wine increased by 139% and 24.7 times, respectively.
Exports were dominated by mechanical and electrical products. In the first five months, Hunan exported mechanical and electrical products worth 7.13 billion CNY to Africa, up 18.4% and accounting for 71.4% of its total exports to Africa during the period. Exports of the "new three" products—electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and photovoltaic products—amounted to 620 million CNY, surging by 104.6%.Morocco is Hunan's eighth-largest trading partner in Africa. In the first five months, Hunan's imports and exports with Morocco reached 860 million CNY, accounting for 3.8% of the province's total trade with Africa. Hunan mainly imported zinc, lead, and copper ores and concentrates from Morocco, valued at 66.776 million CNY, up 93.2%. Hunan primarily exported mechanical and electrical products to Morocco, totaling 500 million CNY with an increase of 8%. Among them, exports of automobiles and electrical equipment grew by 66.6% and 69.7%, respectively.
