Daoxian County is known as the "hometown of dragon boats." In 2021, Daozhou dragon boat was listed as one of the fifth batch of China's national-level intangible cultural heritage items. Zhou Chengyun, born into a family of carpenters, began learning the craft of handmade dragon heads for dragon boats at the age of 16, and has been dedicated to this craft for 61 years. In recent years, Zhou has leveraged the local tourism industry to craft small dragon boat models, locally known as "Baby dragon boats." Such models are fully handmade, with the entire process involving multiple steps including sawing, planing, chiseling, and carving. Today, his handmade dragon boat models have become specialty cultural and creative products of Daoxian County, prized for both their collectible and decorative value, and are sold far and wide.
