The Kiln That Crossed Oceans a Millennium Ago: I Hear the Echoes of the "Belitung Shipwreck" from a Thousand Years Away

4月8日至9日，澳中友好代表团一行20余人抵达长沙，开展以“黑石号的回响：铜官窑与澳大利亚的丝路对话”为主题的文化交流活动。首站走进铜官窑古镇，循着千年瓷路印记，代表团聆听千年“黑石号”的传奇往事，近距离感受海上丝绸之路跨越千年的文明交融。

On the evening of April 8, a 20-member Australia-China Friendship Delegation arrived in Changsha to launch a cultural exchange event themed "Echoes of the Batu Hitam: The Silk Road Dialogue between Tongguan Kiln and Australia." Their first stop was the ancient town of Tongguan Kiln, where they followed the millennia-old ceramic routes, listened to the legendary tale of the wrecked Batu Hitam, and experienced up close the millennia-long interweaving of civilizations along the Maritime Silk Road.

铜官窑，始于唐代，以釉下彩绘和诗文题记装饰闻名，是湖湘文化的重要名片。1998年，在印度尼西亚勿里洞岛海域打捞出的“黑石号”沉船中，出土了约6.7万件中国瓷器，其中5.6万余件来自长沙铜官窑。这一发现，实证了早在1200多年前，湘江之畔的这片窑火，已沿着海上丝绸之路远销东南亚、中东乃至东非海岸，成为中外文明交流互鉴的实物见证。

The Tongguan Kiln, which dates back to the Tang Dynasty, is renowned for its underglaze color paintings and poetic inscriptions, making it an iconic symbol of Huxiang culture. In 1998, approximately 67,000 pieces of Chinese ceramics were salvaged from the wreck of the Batu Hitam off the waters of Belitung Island in Indonesia, of which over 56,000 were from the Tongguan Kiln in Changsha. This discovery provides tangible evidence that more than 1,200 years ago, the kilns along the Xiangjiang River had already been exporting their wares along the Maritime Silk Road to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and even the East African coast, serving as physical testimonies to the exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations.

夜幕降临，铜官窑国风乐园的夜间重头戏拉开帷幕，国家级非物质文化遗产“打铁花”震撼上演。匠人奋力将1600℃的铁水击向夜空，金色火花如繁星倾泻，让南半球的客人们连呼震撼。随后，代表团成员换上汉服，漫步于唐风街区，沉浸式体验大唐盛世的市井烟火。在陶瓷工坊，他们亲手拉坯，体验千年瓷艺的精妙，感受泥土在指尖成器的奇妙过程。

As night fell, the highlight of the evening at Tongguan Kiln National Style Park began—a breathtaking performance of “Dashuhua,” or striking molten iron, a national intangible cultural heritage. Artisans hurled molten iron heated to 1,600°C into the night sky, sending golden sparks cascading like a shower of stars, leaving the guests from the Southern Hemisphere utterly amazed. Later, members of the delegation donned traditional Hanfu and strolled through the Tang-style streets, immersing themselves in the bustling life of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. At a ceramic workshop, they tried their hands at throwing clay on a potter's wheel, experiencing the exquisite artistry of the thousand-year-old ceramic craft and the magical process of turning clay into a vessel with their own hands.

“一千多年前，我们的祖先就已经在使用中国的瓷器；今天，我们亲手触摸到了这段历史的源头。”代表团团员表示，铜官窑之行让澳大利亚友人深刻感受到湖湘文化的独特魅力，也看到了中澳文明对话的无限可能。

"Over a thousand years ago, our ancestors were already using Chinese porcelain; today, we have touched the very origins of this history with our own hands," said a member of the delegation. The visit to Tongguan Kiln, they added, allowed their Australian friends to gain a deep appreciation for the unique charm of Huxiang culture and to see the boundless possibilities for dialogue between Chinese and Australian civilizations.
