The modernization project of the Mexico City Metro Line 1, carried out by the CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., began trial operation on March 23, 2024. Since commencing operations a half century ago, this is the first new train added to this metro line.

This event also marked the first overseas operation of a rubber-tired metro train independently developed by a Chinese enterprise.

The new type of rubber-tire metro train features high efficiency, intelligent operation, and a reduction in energy consumption. With a 9-car formation, the train can run at a maximum operating speed of 80 kilometers per hour, and can accommodate up to 2,252 passengers. The train can adapt to the local terrain conditions as its turning mechanism is equipped with both larger and smaller rubber tires for different functions as well as steel wheels for "double safety insurance.” This mechanism offers an 8% climbing capacity and allows for turns with a 45-degree radius. The upgrading signal system ensures various automated operations of the train, such as acceleration, deceleration, dispatching, and stopping, thereby greatly improving the operation efficiency of the metro.

The Mexico City Metro Line 1 began operation in 1969, with a total length of 18.83 kilometers and 20 stations. The daily passenger load surpasses one million.

The modernization project of the line is CRRC’s first overseas “system+” project, involving investment and financing, new vehicle manufacturing, as well as comprehensive modernization and upgrading of existing car communication signal systems, electro-technical systems, and whole system maintenance, with a service period of up to 19 years. It was included in the international PPP case studies of the United National Development Program (UNDP) in 2022.
