Hunan will create the “most eye-catching digital museum” based on the construction of the “Digital Mawangdui”, which was revealed at the Promotion Conference of the “Six Major Projects” for the Protection and Utilization of Cultural Relics held in Changsha on March 22.

In the “Digital Mawangdui” project, data of cultural relics from the Hunan Museum, mainly the cultural relics of Mawangdui Han Tombs have been acquired through various means such as hyperspectral images and X-ray. Currently, 110,000 images and data of 1.03 million cultural relics have been collected, and nearly 2,000 3D models have been established.

Based on these data, a cultural relic knowledge map of Mawangdui Han Tombs will be created through sorting, exploration, refining, and interpretation. More than 60 multimedia digital exhibitions such as Mawangdui Han Tomb Pit Projection will be launched offline. This year, there will also be an immersive multimedia exhibition of Mawangdui Han Dynasty Culture.

As of now, Hunan Museum has built a complete chain of collection, management, display, dissemination, utilization, and creative development of cultural relic data elements, which is necessary for the construction of a digital museum. It is also exploring the establishment of local standards for the collection and processing of cultural relic data to design a comprehensive system architecture for cultural relic data resources.

At the meeting, multiple key tasks for the protection and utilization of cultural relics in Hunan in 2024 were also announced. For instance, the “Six Major Projects” for cultural relic protection and utilization will be advanced, the Fourth National Cultural Relics Census is to be launched, the Chinese Language Resources Museum will be built, a series of commemorative activities for the 50th anniversary of the archaeological excavation of the Mawangdui Han Tombs will be held, and the ten thousand-mile tea road (Hunan section), Changsha Tongguan Kiln, as well as Yongzhou Cliff Inscriptions will be applied for World Cultural Heritage.
