The ground-breaking ceremony of the Shaoyang-Yongzhou High-speed Railway was held in Shaoyang and Yongzhou simultaneously on the afternoon of December 26, 2023.

Mao Weiming, deputy secretary of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and governor of the People's Government of Hunan Province, attended and announced the commencement of the construction at the Shaoyang venue. Guo Zhuxue, general manager of the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway), delivered a speech.

Li Jianzhong, Hunan vice governor; Qu Hai, provincial government secretary general; and, Wei Hao, president of the China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., Ltd., were present.

Before the ceremony, Governor Mao, General Manager Guo, and their entourage learned about the project's preliminary preparations and thanked railway constructors for their hard work.

The attendees learned about the early stage planning of the Shaoyang-Yongzhou High-speed Railway.

The Shaoyang-Yongzhou High-speed Railway starts from Shaoyang City in the north and stretches to Yongzhou City in the south. It is an important section of the Hohhot-Nanning High-speed Railway, a major part of the national "eight vertical and eight horizontal" high-speed railway network. After being connected to the planned Yongzhou-Qingyuan-Guangzhou High-speed Railway, it will form a new channel for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to go northward, and open up the passenger transportation channel for Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to go northward and eastward.

The railway can effectively alleviate the transportation pressure of the Changsha-Hengyang section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway. It will accelerate the provincial high-speed railways to be interconnected, achieving both "inward connectivity and outward smoothness". The total investment, upon the approval for project feasibility report, was 19.7 billion CNY. The newly-built railway has a total length of about 96 kilometers, with three stations in Shaoyang City, Shaoyang County, and Yongzhou City. The construction of the railway is expected to take four years, and once completed, it will have a designed speed of 350 kilometers per hour.
