As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the fragrance of bamboo leaves for wrapping zongzi fills the air.

At the production workshop of Kanghua Zongye Company in Sangzhi County, it is a hive of activity. Over 100 workers work together, efficiently completing the grading, washing, and packaging of bamboo leaves. The entire production line operates at full capacity to meet both domestic and international orders. The company's manager noted that, by the end of May, sales of bamboo leaves for wrapping zongzi had grown by 10% over last year, with the overall market supply falling short of demand.

As a "land of Chinese bamboo leaves for wrapping zongzi," Sangzhi County has entered its peak production and sales season, with strong demand from overseas markets and substantial growth in export. According to the latest statistics from the Zhangjiajie Customs authority, from January to May, the export value of Sangzhi's bamboo leaves reached 1.958 million CNY, an increase of 211% year on year.

Leveraging excellent resource endowments, Sangzhi's bamboo leaves industry has developed into a mature, comprehensive full-industry-chain system. The county has approximately 300,000 mu (over 20,000 hectares) of bamboo leaves growing area, including nearly 30,000 mu (over 2,000 hectares) under artificial cultivation. In 2025, the bamboo leaves output reached 20,000 tonnes, with a total value exceeding 345 million CNY. The county is home to four large-scale bamboo leaves enterprises and 58 professional cooperatives, forming an integrated industrial framework encompassing development, procurement, processing, sales, and exports.

The robust export momentum is backed by targeted support from the customs authority. To address the short shelf life of fresh bamboo leaves and the need for faster customs clearance, the Zhangjiajie Customs Authority has launched a "door-to-door policy service by customs chief" initiative, helping enterprises resolve clearance issues. A round-the-clock inspection reservation system has been implemented to efficiently complete quarantine inspections and swiftly issue qualification certificates. Additionally, the authority collaborates with foreign trade and logistics enterprises to establish multiple cold-chain export routes, reducing the transit time from production area to port by 30%.
