On April 14, Kang Dongping, a 49-year-old barber from Yiyang, Hunan, was filling his RV with water to prepare for his monthly charity haircut event. Every 16th of the month, Kang closes his shop for the day and drives his mobile barbershop—equipped with a professional shampoo bed—to rural villages, offering free haircuts to elderly residents. He has kept this tradition alive for 11 years.
The heartwarming initiative began in the summer of 2014 when Kang and his wife visited relatives in the countryside. They noticed many elderly villagers struggling with mobility, had to trek miles leaning on canes just to get a haircut in town. Seeking convenience, some elders would get a full head shave when their children could take them to town - saving them all future haircare hassles.
Since then, Kang has dedicated the 16th of each month to traveling between villages, providing free haircuts. In August 2024, he invested his savings into an RV, converting it into a mobile barbershop complete with an adjustable shampoo bed and a hot water system.
So far, Kang’s RV has reached every nearby town. Now, he plans to create a more detailed service map. "Many elderly in remote mountain areas still can’t leave their homes," he said. "I want to take my services even farther."(翻译:潘晓慧)
