1. How bad Chinese food in America actually is and how diverse real Chinese cuisine actually is. Followed by how hard it is to find some (ANY) of those new favorite dishes when I get back home. 来了中国，才知道在美国可能吃的是假中国菜。(只存在于外国的中国菜有一长...串，比如左宗棠鸡)

2. The noise! The minute you arrive in Beijing, you hear people yelling at each other - No worries, they are just speaking, as you may know, the mandarin uses tons so makes you think that they are yelling in some cases but it's not the case! (Of course China is also a deliciously calm and peaceful country when you know where to go!) 刚到北京时，看到人们正吼来吼去?没关系，他们真的只是在说话。中文的四声很容易让人产生在吵架的误会。当然，如果你去对了地方，就知道中国也是一个安静祥和的国家。

3. The slowness of Chinese Starbucks - about 4x as long for the same basic drinks and the same number of customers as I find in the U.S. 中国的星巴克上餐太慢，同样的情况，比美国的星巴克慢4倍!

4. The number of lesbians walking around together. Actually, it was a cultural difference that I quickly clued into (relatively quickly), but my initial reaction to seeing girls arm-in-arm or holding hands was exactly that (blame Western culture and The L Word). Of course, when I realized the truth, I was a tad embarrassed at my presumptuous interpretation of the body language, but I was having lunch with our Foreign Teacher Coordinator and another teacher who was leaving, and she asked him the same question - his response then was the same as mine here. So maybe I'm not the only one who interprets things that way initially. 出于文化差异，看到大街上有很多女生手牵手或者手挽手走来走去，还以为她们是情侣(都怪西方文化还有美剧)，所以很惊讶。知道真相后，为自己的冒昧感到有点尴尬。但是有一天，我和另外两个人一起吃饭，其中一个外教也问了这个问题!原来我并不孤单。

5. Buses. With so many people walking, it is challenging to turn across the flow of pedestrian traffic, but bus drivers know how to push buses through pedestrian traffic without injuring anyone. Bus driving in China is a very refined skill. 公交车。路上行人这么多，公交车司机还能安全准确地通过人流，技巧高超。

6. I ordered a strawberry smoothie and it was not sweet. This is an abomination! Strawberry smoothies are supposed to be sweet! On the other hand, it could be that I was just an ignorant foreigner. =__= 我点了一个草莓慕斯，但它居然不是甜的。这太荒谬了!草莓慕斯本来就应该是甜的!难道......是因为我这个外国人无知......

7. Well, I first went to China in 1990, for two years of language study. What amazed me was the fact everyone was staring at me. I was on a public bus once and a girl couldn’t get her eyes off me, so I just walked up to her and sit down in front of her and stared back. Her bf didn’t like that. 我1990年第一次来中国学了两年中文，当时让我觉得惊讶的是，每个人都喜欢盯着我看。有一次坐公交车，一个女孩完全无法把视线从我身上挪开，所以我就走到她面前坐下来，然后盯回去。她的男朋友也是要疯了。

8. This is the first foreign country I have been to where people initially ignore you. Almost all locals avoid eye contact on the street, in a bus or on a subway. In such a crowded place, often I have felt completely alone, as the people often walk past you without even a glance. 9. Chinese Siesta. Many things surprised me in China, but the thing that sticks in my mind is the day I went to one of the administrative offices in Renmin University during the lunch break. To my complete surprise, everybody in the office was asleep with their heads on their desks (some of them were resting their heads on small pillows). I quickly decided that my business could wait and left them to their slumber.I was later told that having a nap after eating lunch was quite normal in Chinese offices. 中国的很多事都令我吃惊，但我最忘不掉的是有一天中午，我去人民大学某个办公室，看到每个人趴在桌子上睡觉，我吓了一跳。后来才知道在办公室午睡对中国人来说再正常不过了。

10. About the public dances 关于广场舞，一片叫好

"The evening dances in the moonlight. This was truly one of the most mesmerizing things to me, as a visitor. Women and men line up in parks, on street corners, in public spaces, at universities in the evenings, wherever they can find space, and dance in unison. Old women, young men, couples, you name it. Beijing, Shanghai, Qingdao, every Chinese city I've been to, its the same. Perfectly in line, perfectly coordinated. " 月光下的舞蹈。这真的是最吸引作为一个游客的我的地方。晚上，女人男人们在公园里、街角、学校里，还有其他公共场所结伴跳起来。不管男女老少，不管在北京上海还是青岛，所有我去过的地方，都是一样。整齐，和谐。

"All the crazy social things that go on so publicly in parks. The group dancing singing chanting. People just expressing themselves through music dance and art in the park without shame about how good they are. Pretty awesome." 所有的社交活动就在像公园这样公开的场所展开。跳舞、唱歌、朗诵，通过这些方式大方地展示自己。太棒了。

"I remember sending an email back home and commenting that people were literally singing in the streets.Very upbeat. Also, every evening in the parks and public areas people were dancing. It was a great first impression." 我记得曾写邮件给家里，说这里的人在大街上唱歌，很带劲。每天晚上在公园还有类似的公共场所，还有很多人跳舞，感觉很好。

11. There are signs of green energy everywhere. Almost every rooftop has a solar water heater; in some places this is the only source of hot water. In the south there are no central heating systems, many go without heat or air conditioning entirely. Every grocery store has reusable bags; plastic bags sometimes have to be bought and are rarely offered for free at big stores. 绿色能源随处可见，很多屋顶上都有太阳能热水器，南方没有集中供暖，很多人家里都完全不开空调或者暖气。每个商店都有可重复使用的购物袋，在大商店里，塑料袋几乎都要收钱。

Everything can be repaired and almost nothing is wasted; I have had pants, coats, shoes, umbrellas, bags, and countless other things repaired when in the U.S. it would have been customary to throw them out. 东西都可以修修再用，几乎很少浪费。我就有裤子、外套、鞋子、雨伞、包，还有很多东西都被修好了。而在美国，这些东西坏了就会被丢掉。

People just straight up have less garbage, they don't even sell monster garbage bags for huge in home garbage cans like we have in the U.S. in most places. 生活垃圾直接就很少，也不像美国有超大型家用垃圾袋可买。

People are always removing plastic, glass, and metal from the garbage to sell to recyclers, and at the school I work at all of the leftover food and scraps are sent to farms to be used as fertilizer and pig feed (not so appetizing, but green at the very least). I was really surprised by this image of China as putting more effort into reducing waste and energy use than the average American bothers doing. 很多人会把破铜烂铁挑出来卖掉，我工作的学校会把剩饭剩菜送去给农场做肥料或者喂猪。我很吃惊，中国在减少浪费和节约能源这方面做了这么多努力。

12. China have some really beautiful natural places. I have been to zhangjiajie and its breathtaking. One thing I noticed was how chinese scenic places are well managed and crowd control is amazing. But yes crowd can be nightmare. Chinese travel in big groups, big means really big, it can be annoying sometimes when all group members are taking you picture at the same time. I noticed that chinese don't really appreciate a beautiful place, they just want to take a cool selfie and move ahead. Guys, stop and admire the place, why so rush? I really enjoyed traveling across china and looking forward to more visits soon.

中国的自然风景真的很漂亮，我曾经去过张家界，那里美得令人窒息。我发现中国的旅游景点都管理得很好，但是人真的好多!中国人旅游喜欢成群结队，有时候在某个景点照相，所有的人都在一起照。而且我觉得他们都不是在真心看风景，只是来拍个炫酷的自拍然后就走了。朋友们，停下来看看风景不好吗?这么着急干什么?但我真的很喜欢来中国旅行，还要来很多次!
