Hunan Province, located in central China and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, is named “Hunan(south of the lake)” because it is on the south of Dongting Lake and is called “Xiang” for short because the Xiang River, the largest river in the province, runs through it. Hunan covers an area of 211.8 thousand square kilometers with a registered population of 73 million and a permanent population of 69.18 million in 2020, including 14 cities (autonomous prefectures) and 122 counties (county-level cities and districts).


Hunan is truly a place full of scenic spots and fancy entertainments, with numerous historical sites and modernized energy. Here, economy, science and technology, education and medication sectors are vigorously thriving. Statistics have already told us that Hunan is taking off with persistent reforms and development. People here are expected to create one and another “Hunan record” in the future on this treasured land.


Abundant Resources

Hunan has 144 kinds among more than 160 known mineral resources. The reserves of tungsten, tin, bismuth and antimony rank fifi rst in the country. 18 fifi rst-class national protected animals and 55 national protected rare wild plants fifi nd their home in Hunan. Yueyang Tower is one of the Three Famous Towers in South China. Hengshan Mountain is one of the Five Mountains. Wulingyuan Scenic Area is the first national natural scenic spot to be included on the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. The Yongshun “Laosicheng” Site is also on the World Cultural Heritage List. The province is rich in forests with a coverage rate over 59%, and is abundant with water resource, with Dongting Lake being the second largest freshwater lake in China and the drainage area of the 4 major rivers,Xiang, Zi,YuanandLi, covering the whole province.



Increasing Economy on Trillion Scale

The regional GDP rose from 1.77 billion RMB in 1949 to 3.64 trillion RMB in 2018, realizing ahistoric climb from 10 billion scale, and 100 billion scale to 3 trillion scale.



Increasing per Capita Disposable Income

In 2019, the GDP of Hunan Province reached 3975.21 billion RMB, up 7.6% year on year and ranking 9th in China. Revenue in the local general public budget was 300.7 billion RMB. The per capitadisposable personal income of urban residents was 39,842 RMB, growing by 8.6%, and that of rural residents was 15,395 RMB, by 9.2%. Over the fifi rst half year of 2020, the GDP of Hunan has reached 1902.64 billion RMB, with a 1.3% increase over the previous year, topping the nation in terms of increase and growth rate.



Social Construction

Government budgetary spending on people’s livelihood accounts for over 70% of fifi scal expenditure. Hunan has basically addressed the problem of oversized classes at the compulsory education stage and has included the per-pupil spending on preschool education students into fifi scal budget. The urbanization rate has reached 57%. The fifi rst half year of 2020 saw 345.3 thousand new urban jobs. The drinking water quality of water sources in all prefecture-level cities have 100% met the standard, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 94.3%.



Promising Access to Education and Medication

The enrollment rate of schoolage children in primary schools reached 99.98%, and the gross enrollment rate of senior high schools reached 92.5%. There are 1.327 million students in general institutions of higher education, which is an increase of 509.3 times over the year of 1949. The number of health institutions has increased from 239 in 1949 to 56,200 in 2018. The number of technical staff in health institutions has risen from 16,900 to 437,000. The number of doctors per 10,000 population has grown from 5 to 26.2. The average life expectancy in Hunan has increased from 35 years in 1949 to 76.7 years in 2018.



Industry Development

As a major grain production base, Hunan is the largest producer of rice and one of China’s major producers of grain, cotton, oil, ramie, flfl ue-cured tobacco and pork. Hunan enjoys a comprehensive industrial system, with priorities given to 20 emerging industrial chains that enjoy local advantages. The industries of engineering machinery, rail transit, electronic information, automobile and vehicle components manufacturing have gained an edge. The industries of new energy and electric vehicles, new materials and biomedicines are picking up momentum. The industries of equipment manufacturing, agricultural product processing and materials are becoming trillion-yuan industries, and there are 11 industries with 100- billion-yuan market. The industries of radio, film, television, publishing, and cartoon are highly competitive.



Advanced Transportation

Expressways, high-speed railways, mobile communications and broadband Internet have been built from scratch. In 2018, the lengths of railroad lines and highways in service have increased by 4.3 times and 76.6 times, compared with that in 1949, and the lengths of expressways and highspeed railways ranked fourth in China. The number of civil airlines has reached 380. By the end of this June in 2019, the number of mobile Internet users exceeded 52.73 million, and the number of Internet broadband users exceeded 17.45 million.
