Exclusive Interview with Kiri Sam Andrew Manlangai, President of Shefa Province, Republic of Vanuatu: Hunan's Innovative Development Is Impressive

在2026湖南国际友城经贸活动暨合作对话会期间，瓦努阿图共和国谢法省省长基里·萨姆·安德鲁·曼兰盖率代表团到访湖南，并接受湖南日报记者专访。谈及对湖南的第一印象，基里省长表示，湖南的创新发展令他印象深刻。

During the 2026 Hunan International Friendship Cities Economic and Trade Event and Cooperation Dialogue, Kiri Sam Andrew Manlangai, President of Shefa Province of the Republic of Vanuatu, led a delegation to Hunan and received an exclusive interview with a journalist from Hunan Daily. Speaking about his first impression of Hunan, President Kiri said that Hunan's innovative development left a deep impression on him.

首次中国之行促成友好之约

First China Visit Leads to Friendship Agreement

基里省长曾于2025年12月首次访华，并到访湖南。他回忆道，自己对湖南的关注正是始于那次访问。“在我看来，湖南省是一个充满魅力的省份。”基里说。

此次再度访湘，基里省长尤为关注湖南先进的农业、食品加工业及工业体系。谢法省是瓦努阿图首都维拉港所在地，也是该国重要的政治和经济中心。基里省长对深化两省合作有着清晰愿景：“谢法省希望借鉴湖南在工业、农业和技术方面的优势，以湖南为可信赖的合作伙伴，在基础设施、贸易、食品加工和职业培训等领域开展合作。”

President Kiri first visited China in December 2025, which included a trip to Hunan.He recalled that his interest in Hunan began with that visit. "In my view, Hunan is a province full of charm," Kiri said.

During this return visit to Hunan, President Kiri showed particular interest in Hunan's advanced agriculture, food processing industry, and industrial system. Shefa Province, the capital of Vanuatu, which is home to Port Vila, also serves as the country's important political and economic center.President Kiri has a clear vision for deepening cooperation between the two provinces: "Shefa Province hopes to draw on Hunan's strengths in industry, agriculture, and technology, and to work with Hunan as a trusted partner in areas such as infrastructure, trade, food processing, and vocational training."

回顾此次访湘行程，基里省长表示，有许多值得永远珍藏的难忘回忆。9月18日，代表团与湖南方面会晤，就双方如何共同推动国际友好城市经贸交流活动进行商谈。9月19日，基里省长在2026湖南国际友城经贸活动暨合作对话会现场发表演讲，并签署关于通过未来创新消除贫困与饥饿的意向书。9月20日，代表团一行参观了湖南杂交水稻研究中心，对各水稻品种表现出浓厚兴趣。基里省长透露，谢法省希望与湖南杂交水稻研究中心建立合作伙伴关系，在埃法特岛朗朗戈地区设立研究中心，试种水稻秧苗。

Looking back on this visit to Hunan, President Kiri said there were many unforgettable moments worth treasuring forever. On September 18, the delegation met with the Hunan side to discuss how the two sides can work together to promote economic and trade exchanges between international friendship cities. On September 19, Governor Kiri delivered a speech at the 2026 Hunan International Friendship Cities Economic and Trade Event and Cooperation Dialogue, and signed a letter of intent on eradicating poverty and hunger future-oriented innovation. On September 20, the delegation visited the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center and showed great interest in various rice varieties. President Kiri revealed that Shefa Province hopes to establish a partnership with Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center, set up a research center in the Rangrango area of Efate Island, and trial-plant rice seedlings.

期待“新朋友”做客谢法省

Expecting "New Friends" to Visit Shefa Province

“湖南是一个大省，湖南人民十分友好，湖南很棒。”基里省长表示，谢法省虽然面积不大，但拥有芋头、木薯、木瓜、可可等丰富的农产品。湖南的气候温暖、阳光充足，与瓦努阿图十分相似，期待湖南方面明年赴谢法省实地考察。“我希望湖南省与谢法省建立更加紧密的关系，在未来携手合作。”

"Hunan is a large province. The people of Hunan are very friendly. Hunan is wonderful." PresidentKiri said that although Shefa Province is not large in area, it has a wide range of agricultural products such as taro, cassava, papaya, and cocoa. He said Hunan's warm climate and abundant sunshine are very similar to those of Vanuatu, adding that he looks forward to welcoming a Hunan delegation to Shefa Province next year to conduct a field visit."I hope Hunan Province and Shefa Province will build an even closer relationship and work together in the future."
