A Day with My Foreign Friends: The Chinese New Year Vibes in Changsha Hit Different
On February 11, the day of the "Xiaonian"(the little New Year) in southern China, a group of visitors from afar gathered under the lanterns at the Huogong Palace.
They came from different countries, yet leaned over the same table. The Municipal Representative Inheritor of Tantou New Year Paintings taught them how to ink, cover paper and make rubbings step by step. An Italian visitor quietly drew a small flower beside his printed Chinese character "Fu", calling it "the spring of Changsha".
This was the public welfare experience activity "New Spring Festival Painting · New Hunan" featuring the Spring Festival customs of intangible culture heritage. Foreign friends finished their first Chinese New Year woodblock painting ever in the fragrance of ink. Some wrote greetings in their mother tongues on the blank space; others held up their "Fu" works to take photos and shouted newly learned Chinese phrases at the camera.
Spring Festival traditions are originally the unique cultural code of the Chinese people. But at this moment, people of all colors unlocked this code together. It was a warm connection in the winter of Changsha, showing the world the open side of this ancient festival: welcoming, inclusive and generous.
The tastes and vibes of Chinese New Year gathered here, and then scattered onward.
