Palm weaving originated in Sichuan, Hunan and other places in China, and has been used since ancient times to make straw raincoat, slippers, baskets and other daily necessities, which later developed diverse handicrafts to meet people's aesthetic needs. As early as in the Spring and Autumn Period, it was recorded in Book of Odes that the shepherds wore palm-leaf raincoats, more than 1700 years ago.

In Changsha, Hunan Province, an ordinary palm leaf can be transformed into a butterfly, a phoenix, or even a miniature version of Mount Yuelu by the skillful hands of artisans. Fresh palm leaves are boiled and dried to make them pliable. Through the traditional crafts like tearing, pulling, winding and weaving, the palm fiber is layered and tightly interwoven.

As a representative item of the intangible cultural heritage, Changsha palm weaving, from palace novelties in Qing Dynasty to artworks that have landed in the markets of many countries, has revitalized the palm leaves with its dexterous and versatile creativity. Come to Hunan and immerse yourself in the unique charm of this thousand-year-old craft!
